As India celebrated the World Environment Day on Monday with this year’s theme – the campaign to get rid of single-use plastic, India Inc is all set and ready to cut on its plastic use and move towards achieving India’s net zero target by 2070. Companies across sectors are working to address the issue of plastic waste management, through various initiatives while incorporating sustainable practices across the entire value chain. Earlier today, underlining the theme of this year’s Environment Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed happiness that India has been working continuously in this direction for the past 4-5 years. “On the one hand, we have banned single-use plastic while on the other hand, plastic waste processing has been made mandatory,” he said. Due to this, he added that there has been a compulsory recycling of about 30 lakh tonnes of plastic packaging in India which is 75 per cent of the total annual plastic waste produced in India, and around 10 thousand producers, importers and brands have come under its ambit today, a statement from PMO office stated.
