Taking Employee Recognition A Notch Higher: Our ‘Beer for Cheer’ Hackathon Story

Hackathons become a platform for every employee, you, and me to come together, ideate, innovate and create things that matter to us. We rise above the limitations of departmental functions and become truly limitless. The end product may make a difference from a commercial, organizational, societal, or environmental perspective. But there is much more value to the journey than the end product. It fosters a culture of innovation, teamwork, and fun.

Having said that, we have a super interesting story to tell. It revolves around how one of our hackathons, aka Edition 2.0 resulted in the development of an engaging peer-to-peer recognition portal. But to set the context right, let us first take you through some stats that shed light on why having such a portal is important.

Leading HR portals see employee engagement and recognition as a workplace approach resulting in favorable conditions that motivate employees to commit themselves to organizational goals. Stats reveal:

  • Organizations with sophisticated recognition programs are 12x more likely to have strong business outcomes.
  • According to the Harvard Business Review survey, 71% of business executives view employee engagement as critical to achieving business objectives.
  • Research found that employees are 2.7x more likely to be highly engaged when they believe they will be recognized. On the contrary, lack of recognition is the top reason people quit jobs.
  • Moreover, organizations with recognition programs experience 31% lesser attrition than those that don’t.

Hence, employee recognition and engagement play a critical role in business success. This is especially true as organizations embrace remote-first and hybrid work models that can easily impact the engagement levels of a dispersed workforce. The pandemic challenged organizations to keep up with employee engagement levels. Shipsy was no different.

Key Organizational Hiccups That Demanded Immediate Redressal

The absence of employee recognition tools, especially under the work from home setup was challenging the organization to keep the workforce engaged and quickly say ‘thanks’ for their contribution. Here is the list of the challenges:

  • Remote work-induced collaboration issues
  • Reduced cross-team interactions
  • Stagnant motivation levels among employees
  • A distributed workforce posed productivity challenges
  • Absence of a unified platform for employee recognition

Brewing The Solution

As an employee-centric organization, we had to do something. Coincidentally, some employees also took note of it and pursued this idea during Hackathon.

The organization needed an intelligent and nimble employee recognition solution that could help boost employee experience, engagement, and capture data in real-time on an ongoing basis.

Built as a part of Hackathon in 2021, Shipsy’s in-house state-of-the-art instant employee recognition portal “Beer For Cheers (BFC)” entered as a one-stop solution to the challenges. It took only 2-3 days for the technology teams to implement and integrate the solution with their current business communication platform. The BFC portal allows colleagues to cheer each other using beers (points) for a job well done. It fosters a positive and collaborative work culture. Here’s how:

Quick Recognition

The portal requires no special sign-ins or passwords. Employees can use their official IDs to log in and start cheering right away. It helps in keeping the spirits high.

Intelligent Data Capturing

While the sender can choose a specific number of beers to cheer, this data remains hidden from the receiver.  This anonymity keeps the competitive spirit alive and motivates the receiver to continually perform better to get more beers.

Seamless Integration With Slack

Seamless integration with Slack enables everyone to publicly view the recognitions in real-time through the channel. The workforce can use fun emojis (beer bottles, mug, crate, barrel, and others) or comments to participate.

Sticks To The Values

Colleagues can cheer each other for committing to the organization’s core values viz. Collaboration, First-principles Thinking, Customer Obsession, Think Big, Integrity, Frugality, and Be The Problem Solver.

Leaderboard and Insights

A user can see their current rank via the leaderboard. Users are ranked on the basis of their Chiller Storage value, which is the number of beers received from others. A user can see the value of their Chiller Storage only at the end of the quarter. Moreover, the portal gives complete visibility into individual insights to date such as the Total Number Of Cheers, Cheered For A Distinct Number Of People, Inter-team Interactions, and Within Team Interactions. Based on the crate value, ‘Beer Boss of The Month’ or ‘Boozer of The Quarter’ are announced.

Encourages Collaboration

The formula for deriving the chiller storage value has been intelligently designed to foster inter-team collaboration. For instance, the beers will be calculated as 1x from the same team, 2x from business team members, and 3x from other team members.

Rewards and Incentives

Users receive a fresh batch of 500 beers in their crate on the first day of every quarter. The previous quarter’s crate will be elapsed. Both sender and receiver will be rewarded for the number of beers exchanged during the quarter. This also encourages teams to cheer each other rather than waiting to get cheered.

Redeeming Beers For Shipsy Merchandise

Employees can redeem their beers (earned points) to buy articles from the Shipsy goodies inventory. A message gets triggered to the channel every time a purchase is made. This encourages other employees/teammates to perform better and collect as many beers to follow the league.

Key Organizational Value Realized

  • A motivated and engaged workforce
  • Better performance and productivity
  • Enhanced collaboration with 962+ inter-team and 986+ within team cheers to date
  • An organizational culture of healthy competition and appreciation, with over 59048+ beers exchanged via 2245+ cheers to date
  • Rewards in terms of incentives and redeemable points

So, that’s how we set the ball rolling. We simply love exchanging beers at Shipsy, be it real or virtual. Cheers to Shipsians for making us what we are today!
